April 29, (THEWILL) — The Federal Polytechnic, Ukana, has secured strong endorsement from a federal ministerial assessment team following a review of its skills development programmes and engineering workshop projects.
The Ministerial Committee on Skills Development and Engineering Workshop Intervention (MCSD/EWI), during an evaluation visit, cited the institution’s practical training model and effective deployment of TETFund-supported facilities as key strengths.
The visit is part of a nationwide assessment of polytechnics benefitting from the 2026 TETFund Skills Development Intervention and the “One Product, One Polytechnic” initiative.
Team lead, Engr. Jide Soyemi, said the exercise is focused on measuring how institutions translate federal investments into industry-relevant skills and innovation outcomes.
At the Polytechnic’s Entrepreneurship Centre, the committee inspected locally fabricated equipment, including machines for tissue paper and paint production and described the projects as functional and market-oriented, with potential to support small-scale enterprise and job creation.
The committee also noted the institution’s alignment with national technical education priorities and ongoing reforms driven by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), aimed at repositioning polytechnics as centres of innovation and skills acquisition.
Rector of the institution, Mrs Eduma Enobong Essien, said the polytechnic would sustain its focus on equipping students with practical competencies and expanding opportunities in entrepreneurship.
The delegation included Engr. Bashir Datti of NBTE, who served as Team Secretary, alongside other officials. Senior management staff of the polytechnic were also present during the engagement.
The assessment, according to the team, underscores the increasing scrutiny of technical institutions as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its skills base and drive industrial growth through vocational and engineering education.
