May 26, (THEWILL) – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, in a statement issued on Sunday announced the release of the results of the recently conducted Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Resit Examination.
JAMB said in the statement that about 200,000 more candidates scored above the 200 average mark in the resit examination, despite the fact that the majority, 1.3 (about 70 per cent) out of 1.9 million candidates, scored below 200.
THEWILL recalls that in the original results released by JAMB on May 9, 2025, over 1.5 million candidates out of 1.9 million candidates who took the UTME had scored below 200 out of the total 400 marks.
The results, described as the poorest since the introduction of the Computer-Based Test format, CBT, by JAMB, had raised deep concerns in the country.
Under pressure, JAMB was compelled to carry out an investigation and it discovered that the mass failure was due to technical and human errors in its system.
JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, told the nation that the results of 379,997 candidates across 157 centres in the Lagos and South-East zones had been compromised due to a technical glitch.
He attributed the issue to faulty server updates, which hindered the proper upload of candidates’ responses during the first three days of the examination.
The registrar confirmed that affected candidates would be required to retake the examination.
The Board believes the results of the resit examination reflect an improvement in performance, compared to past years. This does not only confirm its claim that the original results released on May 9 were marred by a technical glitch but also indicates that the UTME has not suffered a dip in terms of standards and quality as previously feared.
We expect the foregoing to serve as a lesson to JAMB. We urge the examination body to do well to ensure that its integrity is not injured by any means.
