January 16, (THEWILL) – The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos remains structurally sound and safe for use, dismissing social media claims that the bridge is unstable and shaking.
Addressing journalists during an inspection tour of the 11-kilometre bridge on Thursday, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olukorede Kesha, described the rumours as baseless and the handiwork of mischief-makers.
Kesha emphasized that there was no cause for alarm, urging the public to disregard the false reports.
“The Honourable Minister has directed that I come out and tell Lagosians and Nigerians that there is nothing wrong with the bridge. The rumour is the handiwork of mischief columnists – those who are idle and think the political atmosphere is too quiet for them,” he said.
Kesha explained that the inspection involved driving the entire stretch of the bridge to verify its condition, and no abnormalities were found.
“We took time with you (journalists) to go through the entire length of the 11km bridge. We drove the length and back, and we saw that there is nothing amiss,” Kesha stated.
He assured motorists and residents of Lagos that the bridge’s structural integrity remains intact, noting that government officials and Lagosians alike continue to use the bridge daily without issues.
“We are using this opportunity to tell the motoring public, Lagosians, and all Nigerians that the bridge is safe and the integrity is not in doubt. After all, it is the same bridge that we, Lagosians, and ministry officials ply every day,” he added.
The Third Mainland Bridge, a vital link connecting Lagos Island to the mainland, has undergone periodic maintenance in recent years to ensure its safety and longevity.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to keeping the bridge in optimal condition for public use.
