November 08, (THEWILL) – The US Department of Justice has filed federal charges against three people including Farhad Shakeri, Carlisle Rivera, and Jonathon Loadholt, over an alleged plot to assassinate Donald Trump
DoJ court documents stated that one of the defendants, Shakeri, was allegedly contracted in September by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Prosecutors alleged that Shakeri (still at large in Iran) said in a recorded conversation with investigators that he was originally commissioned to assassinate American and Israeli citizens inside the United States.
Court documents further alleged that the IRGC on October 7 gave Shakeri seven days to assassinate Trump.
However, should the plan fail, the IRGC would wait until after the presidential election to move forward as they believed Trump would lose.
The two other defendants, Rivera and Loadholt, who are American citizens, were arrested in New York and are accused of helping the Iranian government surveil a separate US citizen of Iranian origin.
They made their initial appearance in court on Thursday and are being detained pending trial.
“There are few actors in the world that pose as grave a threat to the national security of the United States as does Iran.
“The Justice Department has charged an asset of the Iranian regime who was tasked by the regime to direct a network of criminal associates to further Iran’s assassination plots against its targets, including President-elect Donald Trump”, said Attorney General Merrick Garland.
