December 30, (THEWILL) — The Kano State Police Command has announced a significant decline in thuggery and phone snatching, stating that the criminal activities that once plagued the state capital are now becoming history.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, disclosed this on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, during an end-of-year press briefing at the Command Headquarters in Bompai.
He attributed the breakthrough to the successful implementation of “Operation Kukan Kura,” a specialized initiative launched to disrupt criminal networks and street violence.
CP Bakori reported that between January 1 and December 30, 2025, the Command arrested a total of 3,081 suspects for various major crimes.
Notably, suspected thugs, known locally as Yan Daba, accounted for the largest portion of these arrests, with 2,350 individuals taken into custody.
The figures also included the arrest of 146 armed robbery suspects, 50 kidnapping suspects, and 112 suspected drug dealers.
“Today, the issue of thuggery and mobile phone robbery is becoming history with the successful implementation of Operation Kukan Kura,” the Commissioner said.
He further noted that the Command had successfully surmounted the challenge of farmer-herder clashes during the period under review.
The measures employed in 2025 included intelligence-led policing, enhanced community engagement, and regular capacity building for officers.
Bakori also highlighted the expansion of the Command’s Cybercrime Unit and a strengthened synergy with other security agencies, particularly in joint border patrols.
The Command’s operational recoveries for the year were substantial, including nine AK-47 rifles, 13 English pistols, 63 locally made or fabricated guns, and over 200 rounds of ammunition.
Stolen property recovered included 145 mobile phones, 94 motor vehicles, 52 tricycles, and 99 motorcycles. Additionally, large quantities of illicit drugs such as cannabis, Tramadol, Codeine syrup, and the potent local substance known as “Akuskura” were seized.
The Commissioner emphasized that with the drastic reduction in crime, Kano is experiencing a wave of peace essential for economic and political stability. He assured residents that the Command would sustain and improve upon these strategies throughout 2026.
