December 30, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu has firmly ruled out any reversal or delay in the implementation of Nigeria’s new tax laws, confirming that the reform acts will take full effect on January 1, 2026, as scheduled.
The President made this declaration on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, amid growing public discourse and speculation over possible amendments to the recently enacted fiscal framework.
He clarified that the tax laws which came into force on June 26, 2025, alongside those slated for the new year, will proceed without interruption.
According to the President, the reforms represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation capable of supporting long-term economic growth and national development.
He emphasisethat the primary goal is a structural reset rather than a mere increase in tax rates.
“The tax laws are not designed to raise taxes,” the President stated.
“Rather, they are aimed at supporting a structural reset, driving harmonisation, protecting dignity, and strengthening the social contract between government and citizens.”
Addressing concerns about potential changes to specific provisions, the President maintained that no substantial issues have been identified that would justify disrupting the reform agenda.
He stressed that the process has moved beyond policy formulation and is now firmly in the delivery stage, urging all stakeholders to support the implementation phase.
“Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature and reactive measures,” he added, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the integrity of enacted laws.
The President assured Nigerians that the Presidency would continue to work closely with the National Assembly to swiftly resolve any administrative issues that may emerge during the rollout.
He reiterated that the Federal Government remains committed to a tax system that promotes prosperity, equity, and shared responsibility across the country.
THEWILL reports that the January 1 takeoff marks the final phase of the comprehensive tax reform package recommended by the Taiwo Oyedele-led Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee.
