March 15, (THEWILL) — Thugs on Saturday unleashed violence on officials of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during a membership registration exercise and the opening of the party’s secretariat in Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State, disrupting the event and destroying property at the venue.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers arrived in large numbers and began vandalising canopies and chairs set up for the exercise, forcing party officials and supporters to flee the scene.
A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, captured the moment the thugs stormed the venue while issuing threats and warnings against the presence of the ADC in the area.
In the footage, an unidentified leader of the group was heard shouting: “What is going on in our Bakassi, scatter everywhere. We don’t need any party here apart from the APC in Bakassi. Scatter everywhere.
“God punish una there. Everywhere must shut down, we don’t want ADC in this Bakassi.”
The disruption brought the registration exercise to an abrupt halt, as party members scrambled to salvage what remained of the materials at the venue.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Police Command, Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the incident.
Eitokpah, however, disclosed that no arrest had been made in connection with the attack as of the time of filing this report.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over political intolerance, following similar disruptions involving members of the ADC in Edo and Rivers States, where political thugs reportedly attacked party members and obstructed registration activities.
Observers say the recurring incidents highlight the need for stronger security measures and tolerance among political actors as parties intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
