June 27, (THEWILL) – President Bola Tinubu has appointed Morenike Henry as the Chairman of the National Council of the Nigerian Legion, making her the first woman to hold the top position in the veterans’ organisation.
The appointment was confirmed in a statement signed by Henry David, Assistant Chief Information Officer at the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation.
The appointment is seen as a significant milestone in President Tinubu’s push for gender inclusion and a reflection of his administration’s commitment to the 35 per cent affirmative action for women in leadership roles.
“This appointment is not just symbolic. It speaks to President Tinubu’s ongoing commitment to inclusive leadership and giving women their rightful place in national development,” the statement noted.
Morenike is a seasoned veteran and a passionate advocate for the welfare of ex-service personnel. She began her career in the Nigerian Army as a Dental Nurse and rose through the ranks in both military and civilian capacities.
Until her new appointment, she served as Director of Corporate Affairs at the National Headquarters of the Nigerian Legion. She is also the coordinator and founding member of the Female Military Veteran Association (FMVA).
In addition, she is the Chief Executive Officer of Hengramore Care Home, a voluntary organisation that provides support to vulnerable groups, including widows, children, and retired service members.
Her efforts have helped align the Nigerian Legion with international veteran bodies in the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada.
Henry’s leadership is expected to revitalise the Council’s operations, particularly in areas of veteran reintegration, skills acquisition, employment support, and advocacy for improved welfare and recognition of ex-servicemen, widows of fallen heroes, and their families.
In her new role, she will work closely with the Ministry of Defence to implement these strategic initiatives.
