November 19, (THEWILL) – President Bola Tinubu has asked the Nigerian Senate to consider and confirm one nominee as Resident Electoral Commissioners and two others as National Commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The request is coming exactly two weeks after President Tinubu on November 4, nominated a lawyer, Saseyi Feyijimi Ibiyemi, as REC representing Ondo State, Abdulrazak Yusuf Tukur and Professor Sunday Ajah as a National Commissioner for INEC, representing the North-West and South-East respectively.
However, the President in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary session on Tuesday, emphasised the importance of the appointments.
He stated that their confirmation is essential to “strengthen the operational framework of the Independent National Electoral Commission in preparation for future elections.”
Meanwhile, the Senate has referred the nominations to its Committee on INEC, which has been directed to conduct screenings and submit its report promptly.
