April 04, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu on Saturday reaffirmed his administration’s determination to decisively tackle insecurity across Nigeria, declaring that banditry and other violent crimes will be defeated through sustained investment in the nation’s security architecture.
The President made this known in Abeokuta during a high-profile ceremony marking the inauguration of the Gateway International Airport and several landmark infrastructural projects executed by the Ogun State Government.
Speaking at a grand reception following the commissioning, Tinubu expressed confidence in the country’s trajectory, assuring Nigerians that his administration remains resolute in restoring peace and stability nationwide.
“We will win banditry and defeat insecurity. We will continue to invest more to strengthen the security architecture of Nigeria to intensify our fight against banditry and overcome insecurity,” the President declared.
The commissioning ceremony featured the unveiling of the Gateway International Airport, two state-owned aircraft under Gateway Air, the Gateway Aviation Housing Scheme in Iperu-Remo, and the Ilishan-Airport Road, among other critical infrastructure projects designed to enhance economic growth and connectivity.
Tinubu described the airport as a strategic economic asset positioned to serve as a major hub within Nigeria’s industrial corridor.
According to him, the facility will significantly boost the aviation sector while catalysing socio-economic development in Ogun State and across the country.
He commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for effectively deploying increased federal allocations toward impactful infrastructure and industrial development, noting that such initiatives are vital to Nigeria’s long-term prosperity.
The President further emphasised that his administration’s reform agenda is people-centred, acknowledging the sacrifices Nigerians are making while assuring them of a more prosperous future.
He stated that ongoing economic reforms have helped steer the country away from the consequences of past mismanagement and laid the groundwork for sustainable growth.
Highlighting the integration of the airport project with independent energy sources, Tinubu revealed that the facility is powered through strategic investments in gas infrastructure, ensuring operational efficiency and sustainability.
“Today, we also virtually commissioned several projects. This airport project is integrated with independent investments in gas and energy, alongside other initiatives designed to impact every level of society,” he said.
He added that the government’s focus on mobility, security, and agriculture reflects a comprehensive approach to national development, stressing that enhanced transportation systems and strengthened security infrastructure will improve daily life and safeguard lives and property.
In his remarks, Governor Abiodun expressed gratitude to the President for his continued support, stating that federal interventions have played a critical role in positioning Ogun as Nigeria’s industrial gateway.
He described the Gateway International Airport as a flagship achievement of his administration, noting that the facility boasts a nearly four-kilometre runway capable of accommodating large aircraft, a modern control tower, advanced aviation systems, and cargo infrastructure tailored to boost trade and logistics.
The governor announced the commencement of operations by Gateway Airlines, which will deploy Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft, alongside cargo services aimed at strengthening supply chains and enhancing economic activities.
Providing an overview of the state’s developmental strides, Abiodun revealed that Ogun’s internally generated revenue has surged from ₦40 billion to over ₦250 billion annually within seven years, while its Gross Domestic Product has grown from ₦4 trillion to ₦17 trillion.
He added that the administration has constructed or rehabilitated over 1,600 kilometres of roads, delivered more than 7,000 affordable housing units, completed over 140 primary healthcare centres, and established a 200-bed medical centre of excellence.
“These projects are deliberate efforts to improve quality of life, stimulate economic growth, and position Ogun State as a leading destination for investment and innovation,” the governor said.
Also speaking, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the Ogun State Government for its achievements, attributing the success to effective collaboration with the legislature and strong governance.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed satisfaction with the completion of the airport, describing it as a significant milestone in the state’s history and a testament to visionary leadership.
The event drew a distinguished gathering of stakeholders, including governors from several states, members of the National Assembly, captains of industry, and traditional and religious leaders, underscoring the national significance of the projects.
