December 09, (THEWILL) – President Bola Tinubu congratulated Dr Bolu Ogunyemi on his election as the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) president.
Dr Ogunyemi, a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland and an accomplished dermatologist, is the first black person to be elected to the position in 158 years of the association, after defeating his opponent, Susan MacDonald. He will represent the CMA in the media, provincial and territorial medical associations, government, and other partner organisations in Canada.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on Monday, Tinubu commended Ogunyemi’s visionary leadership, commitment to excellence, and compassion in serving others.
The President expressed confidence in Ogunyemi’s qualifications, noting that his extensive medical expertise and over 15 years of leadership experience had adequately prepared him for the role.
He also shared optimism regarding the formal approval of Ogunyemi’s election at the CMA’s Annual General Meeting scheduled for May 2025.
President Tinubu urged the incoming CMA President to approach his new responsibilities with inclusivity and respect for diverse perspectives, while also extending a hand of partnership to other candidates who vied for the position.
Acknowledging Ogunyemi’s journey, which includes serving as a visiting dermatologist in Labrador City since 2018, Tinubu described his achievement as a testament to the global recognition of Nigerian talent.
The President assured Ogunyemi of unwavering support from the Nigerian government and its people, adding that his success serves as a source of national pride.
“This significant accomplishment underscores the global impact of Nigerians in diverse fields, as Ogunyemi prepares to take the helm of an organisation that influences healthcare policy across Canada”, he said.
