April 02, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, received the President of the Republic of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, in a high-level diplomatic engagement to strengthen bilateral relations and advance regional cooperation.
The meeting signals a renewed push by Nigeria and Chad to tackle persistent security challenges in the Lake Chad Basin, a region that has continued to face threats from insurgency, cross-border crime, and humanitarian crises affecting millions of residents.
Welcoming his Chadian counterpart, President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening collaboration with neighbouring countries to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development across West Africa and the Sahel. He emphasised that stronger regional alliances remain critical to effectively combating insecurity while unlocking economic opportunities.
In his remarks, President Déby expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s leadership role in regional peace efforts, stressing that sustained cooperation in intelligence sharing, military coordination, and economic partnerships is essential to improving the welfare of citizens in both countries.
Both leaders also reviewed ongoing multilateral engagements under key regional platforms, including the Lake Chad Basin Commission and the African Union. They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening joint counter-terrorism operations and expanding socio-economic development initiatives across the sub-region.
