August 17, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu has congratulated winners of the by-elections held on Saturday in 16 constituencies across 12 states, describing the exercise as another milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The President commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for conducting what he described as “largely hitch-free polls” devoid of violence and irregularities, noting that the outcome reflected the will of the people.
According to INEC’s results, the All Progressives Congress secured victory in 12 constituencies, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance won two, the Peoples Democratic Party one, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party one.
Tinubu specifically hailed the new APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, for what he called an emphatic first electoral triumph under his leadership.
“Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda has shown leadership capacity and demonstrated what is achievable when popular candidates are fielded and when unity of purpose guides party leaders,” the President said.
He also praised APC governors, stakeholders, and supporters for rallying behind the party’s candidates to secure victory.
“To all APC faithful and the electorate, thank you for the confidence reposed in our party. Be assured that our Renewed Hope slogan is not just a catchphrase. Our destination is a better, more secure, and more prosperous Nigeria, and by the Grace of God, we shall take you there,” he added.
Tinubu commended other political parties and their candidates for participating in the polls, urging them to continue embracing sportsmanship, fair contest, and magnanimity, which he described as the bedrock of democracy.
Meanwhile, the President has felicitated former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, on his 84th birthday.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu rejoiced with the family, friends, and associates of the former leader, whom he credited with making significant contributions to Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development during his eight-year rule.
He recalled Babangida’s achievements, including the construction of the Third Mainland Bridge, economic reforms, and the establishment of key institutions such as the State Security Service, National Intelligence Agency, Defence Intelligence Agency, and the Federal Road Safety Corps.
Tinubu also noted his role in state creation and the relocation of the Federal Capital from Lagos to Abuja.
The President prayed for the retired general’s continued health, strength, and long life.
