December 21, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu has immortalised the late Islamic scholar and spiritual leader, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, by renaming the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State, after him.
The President announced the decision on Saturday during a condolence visit to the Bauchi State Government and the family of the late Islamic scholar, who passed away recently. The institution will now be known as Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University of Health Sciences, in honour of the revered cleric’s lifelong contributions to religious scholarship, national unity, and social development.
President Tinubu said the honour was a fitting recognition of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s exceptional legacy, describing him as a man of honesty, integrity, and great character.
According to the President, the late cleric was a towering figure whose teachings and life work impacted millions across Nigeria and beyond. He noted that Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi devoted his life to preaching, knowledge dissemination, and moral guidance, inspiring generations with his commitment to righteousness, tolerance, and unity.
The late Sheikh brought impactful knowledge to the people, a great scholar and a Nigerian conscience who worked tirelessly in the path of Almighty Allah, preaching the word, knowledge, honesty and integrity, the President said.
The President added that his visit was not only to commiserate with the Bauchi State Government and the bereaved family, but also to honour a national figure whose influence transcended religious and ethnic boundaries.
He stated that he was there to offer his condolences to the government, the people, and the public at large, noting that the loss affected the entire country and not just Bauchi.
Tinubu also urged Nigerians to uphold the values exemplified by Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, including righteousness, tolerance, and unity, stressing that such principles are vital for national cohesion and peaceful coexistence.
THEWILL reports that Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, expressed profound gratitude to the President for personally visiting the state and for the decision to immortalise the late cleric. He described the President’s presence as a demonstration of deep solidarity and respect for both the family of the deceased and the people of Bauchi State.
Governor Mohammed recalled the longstanding relationship between President Tinubu and the late Sheikh, noting that the President had earlier shown national respect by sending Vice President Kashim Shettima and a high-powered delegation to attend the funeral prayers.
Looking at the streets, the governor noted that the people of Bauchi were with the President, describing it as a reciprocal love rooted in the President’s history with the late scholar.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Dr Bashir Dahiru Usman Bauchi thanked President Tinubu for his support and for recognising the immense contributions of the late cleric.
He described Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi as a global scholar and spiritual leader whose legacy includes the establishment of educational institutions and philanthropic initiatives benefiting both Muslims and non-Muslims across Nigeria and beyond.
Dr Bashir affirmed the family’s commitment to sustaining the late Sheikh’s work under the leadership of the Khalifa, while also commending Governor Mohammed for his unwavering support.
Among the dignitaries present at the visit were the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni; the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang; members of the National Assembly from Bauchi State; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar; and the Minister of Health and Social Development, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate.
Others included the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; former Speaker, Yakubu Dogara; and former governors Isa Yuguda and Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar.
