January 27, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate’s approval to significantly expand the capacity of Nigeria’s superior courts, proposing an increase in the number of justices for both the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court.
In a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the President sought to amend the Court of Appeal Act to raise the number of justices from 70 to 110.
He also requested an amendment to the Federal High Court Act to increase its judicial bench from 70 to 90 judges.
These moves are intended to address the mounting caseloads that have slowed the administration of justice and to better align the judiciary with contemporary legal realities.
Beyond increasing personnel, the proposed amendments seek to modernize the appellate system by formally recognizing virtual court proceedings and establishing an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Center within the Court of Appeal.
The President also requested the Senate’s confirmation of Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole for appointment to the Supreme Court bench, following his recent recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC).
In a further move to reform the social sector, the President transmitted a bill to the National Assembly seeking to amend 24 different health sector laws.
This legislative package aims to streamline the governance of health institutions, particularly by reducing the size of bloated boards to improve operational efficiency.
The Senate resumed plenary on Tuesday after a five-week recess, but the session was marked by a somber atmosphere.
