January 07, (THEWILL) – President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday, exchanged pleasantries with former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, when they met at the Black Star Square in Accra, during the inauguration of John Mahama as the president of Ghana.
Both from the South west of Nigeria, President Tinubu shook hands with the former President, who publicly opposed his election as Nigeria’s president.
THEWILL reports that Obasanjo has been consistent in criticising President Tinubu’s administration since he assumed the presidency.
While supporting the removal of petrol subsidy, Obasanjo had attacked the policy, saying it had been “wrongly and thoughtlessly” implemented.
“Today, the government has taken three decisions, two of which are necessary but wrongly and thoughtlessly implemented and have led to the impoverisation of the economy and of Nigerians. These are removal of subsidy, closing the gap between the black market and official rates of exchange and the third is dealing with a military coup in Niger Republic”, he said.
In his keynote address at the Chinua Achebe leadership forum held at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, USA, in November last year, Obasanjo said Nigeria was a failing state under Tinubu. Citing increasing corruption and economic hardship, the former President blamed Tinubu, labelling him as Baba-go-slow and Emilokan.
He also said Nigeria was sinking into insecurity, division, and underdevelopment under Tinubu’s administration.
Recently, Obasanjo attacked the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and discredited its claims that the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries had been rehabilitated.
