November 04, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive overhaul of facilities at security training institutions across the country, particularly those operated by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other internal security agencies.
The directive was disclosed by Enugu State Governor and Chairman of the National Economic Council (NEC) Ad-hoc Committee on Security Training Reforms, Peter Mbah, during an inspection of training facilities in Lagos.
Mbah was accompanied by Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun; former Inspector-General of Police and Secretary of the Committee, Alkali Usman Baba; and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit (SPU), Olatunji Disu.
Speaking with journalists, Mbah said the President expressed serious concern over the deplorable state of training facilities for security personnel and had mandated an urgent intervention to modernise them in line with global standards.
He explained that Tinubu gave the directive during the last NEC meeting held on October 23, stressing that the reforms are critical to his administration’s goal of building a professional, disciplined, and rights-conscious security workforce capable of supporting his $1 trillion economy target within five years.
“The state of most training institutions is incompatible with the President’s vision for a modern, efficient, and humane security system,” Mbah said. “Some facilities are outdated and clearly unfit for the level of professionalism Nigeria requires. We must modernise to strengthen the country’s internal security architecture.”
He revealed that the committee has a 30-day deadline to complete a nationwide assessment and submit a detailed report on the planned overhaul.
Governor Abiodun, in his remarks, described security as the foundation for sustainable national development and called for stronger collaboration between federal and state governments to drive the reforms.
Also speaking, former IGP Alkali Baba emphasised the need to reposition security training institutions to produce officers equipped to confront contemporary threats while maintaining professionalism and respect for human rights.
The committee will continue its inspection tour across the country before submitting its recommendations to the National Economic Council.
