March 10, (THEWILL) – President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Education, Kano, to Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, in honour of the late statesman and diplomat.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed this in a statement on Monday.
The decision, according to the Presidency, is aimed at preserving the legacy of Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s socio-political development.
A distinguished diplomat, Sule served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and was Chairman of the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid.
His contributions also extended to national politics, where he held various key positions, including chief whip of the Federal House of Representatives from 1954 to 1959, leader of Nigeria’s delegation to the Conference of Independent States in 1960, first Federal Commissioner of Public Complaints in 1976, and Minister of Mines and Power.
Tinubu emphasised that immortalizing Sule’s legacy would serve as an inspiration for younger generations, encouraging them to uphold values of integrity, patriotism, character, and nationalism.
The Federal University of Education, Kano, originally established by the Kano State Government, is one of seven specialised universities of education under the Federal Government. As a federal institution, it remains committed to training teachers and strengthening Nigeria’s education sector.
