February 24, (THEWILL) – A new era has begun at the Force Headquarters as President Bola Tinubu approved the resignation of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun and appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu as the nation’s new police chief, signaling a significant leadership transition within the Nigeria Police Force.
The Presidency confirmed that Egbetokun stepped down on Tuesday citing pressing family considerations, bringing an early end to his four-year tenure, originally set to conclude in June 2027 under the amended Police Act.
President Tinubu expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of dedicated service, highlighting his professionalism, commitment, and efforts to strengthen internal security during his tenure.
The leadership change comes as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to confront security challenges across the country, including kidnapping, banditry, and organised criminal activities.
A statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, stated that President Tinubu appointed Disu as Acting IGP, citing his operational expertise, leadership skills, and ability to provide steady guidance during this critical period.
Prior to his appointment, Disu held several strategic roles within the police hierarchy, including Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and head of the elite Intelligence Response Team (IRT), where he earned recognition for intelligence-driven policing and operational effectiveness.
In compliance with the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s substantive appointment, after which his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
Egbetokun’s departure follows ongoing debate over his continued stay in office. In January, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi SAN, reaffirmed that Egbetokun’s tenure, effective from 31 October 2023, was legally secured under the 2024 amendment to the Police Act, which allows an occupant of the office to complete the statutory four-year term even after reaching retirement age.
Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.
