July 9 (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to expedite consideration and passage of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in a move aimed at strengthening the administration, governance and quality of public senior secondary education across Nigeria.
THEWILL reports that the President’s request was contained in a letter read on the floor of the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Thursday’s plenary.
In the correspondence, Tinubu informed lawmakers that the proposed amendment bill received the approval of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at its meeting of April 30, 2026, and was subsequently transmitted to the National Assembly for legislative action.
According to the President, the amendment seeks to reinforce the legal and institutional framework of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), enabling it to effectively coordinate and oversee the development of public senior secondary education nationwide.
“The purpose of the bill is to strengthen the administration and governance of public senior secondary education in Nigeria”, the President stated in the letter.
Tinubu said the proposed legislation aligns with his administration’s broader education reform agenda aimed at building stronger institutions, improving learning outcomes and advancing national development through enhanced educational standards.
“In consequence of the above and in furtherance of this administration’s efforts to strengthen the educational institutions in the national interest, the National Senior Secondary Education Commission Amendment Bill, 2026, is forwarded for legislative action by the National Assembly”, he wrote.
The President also appealed to the Senate to grant the bill accelerated consideration.
“While I hope that the Senate will consider the bill and grant it expeditious passage, please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration and personal regards”, the letter added.
Following the reading of the communication, Senate President Akpabio referred the proposed legislation to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for legislative processing.
He directed the committee to schedule the bill for further consideration and ensure that it is reported back to the Senate within one week, signalling the chamber’s intention to commence work on the proposal without delay.
The National Senior Secondary Education Commission was established to coordinate the development of public senior secondary education, improve academic standards and support state governments through policy coordination, funding interventions and quality assurance mechanisms.
