July 15, (THEWILL) — Former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest on Tuesday at his residence in Daura, Katsina State, following funeral prayers and interment attended by top dignitaries, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Buhari’s burial came hours after his remains were flown back from London, arriving at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina.
From there, his body was transported in a solemn hour-long motorcade to Daura, as crowds lined the streets to pay their final respects to the late Nigerian leader.
Leading the procession was President Tinubu, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima; President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau; Niger Republic’s Prime Minister, Ali Lamine Zeine; former President of Niger Republic, Issoufou Mahamadou; former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; as well as several state governors, ministers, and prominent business leaders.
Upon arrival in Daura, a brief lying-in-state ceremony was held at Buhari’s residence. This was followed by the funeral prayer (Salatul Janazah) led by Sheikh Salisu Rabiu, Chief Imam of the Central Mosque in Daura.
President Tinubu and members of the late president’s family were present at the final interment, which took place at 5:50 p.m.
The state funeral was marked by full military honours, including a reveille and a 21-gun salute in tribute to the former Commander-in-Chief.
A weeklong programme of mourning is expected to continue, beginning with an official condolence visit by the Presidential Committee to the Buhari family later on Tuesday.
President Buhari served as Nigeria’s leader from 2015 to 2023. His burial in Daura marks the end of a significant era in Nigeria’s political history.
