March 04, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, formally swore in Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police (IGP) at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja, before presiding over a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
The ceremony, held at the Presidential Villa, followed the unanimous ratification of Disu’s appointment by the Nigeria Police Council, paving the way for his formal inauguration as the nation’s top cop.
In his remarks, President Tinubu charged the new IGP to deepen professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force and intensify efforts to tackle insecurity across the country. He emphasised the need for intelligence-driven policing, improved community engagement, and stronger synergy among security agencies to confront Nigeria’s evolving security challenges effectively.
Disu, a seasoned officer with over three decades of service, rose through the ranks of the Force, holding several strategic positions. He previously served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, where he was credited with leading coordinated operations against criminal networks and strengthening inter-agency collaboration. He also served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), among other investigative and tactical assignments nationwide.
An alumnus of the University of Ilorin, the new IGP has undergone extensive professional training locally and internationally in counter-terrorism, intelligence-led policing, and strategic leadership. Over the years, he has earned commendations for operational efficiency, discipline, and administrative competence, with colleagues describing him as a firm advocate of internal accountability and reform within the Force.
Responding after taking the oath of office, Disu expressed gratitude to the President and members of the Police Council for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to prioritise the protection of lives and property, improve officers’ welfare, and strengthen internal discipline mechanisms, while consolidating ongoing reforms to restore public trust in policing.
President Tinubu also administered the oath of office to six commissioners of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) and two commissioners of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).
The ceremony was witnessed by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; the National Security Adviser; Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Esther Walson-Jack; ministers; service chiefs; senior government officials; and family members of the appointees.
Proceedings of the Federal Executive Council commenced immediately after the swearing-in, with a considerable number of Council members in attendance.
