August 13, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday swore in Prof. Dakas C.J. Dakas as Chairman and Uchenna Eugene Okolocha as Commissioner of the Nigeria Law Reform Commission (NLRC).
The brief ceremony took place at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja, shortly before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
Speaking to State House correspondents after his inauguration, Prof. Dakas pledged the Commission’s commitment to overhauling the nation’s legal framework by reforming and deleting obsolete laws.
“We will be deliberate about identifying and proposing reforms for some of the very obsolete laws that we have. Quite a number of our laws date back to the colonial era and are still on the statute books. Many of them are not fit for purpose,” he said.
He stressed that the Commission’s reform drive will be pursued in close collaboration with the National Assembly and the executive arm to ensure the legal system reflects contemporary social, economic, and political realities.
“Our goal is not just to amend but to actively delete laws that hinder progress and no longer align with the nation’s aspirations,” he added.
The NLRC is mandated to review and update Nigeria’s legal framework, ensuring it meets the demands of justice, fairness, and good governance.
Meanwhile, during Wednesday’s FEC meeting, members observed a minute’s silence in honour of former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, who died on August 9, 2025, at the age of 78.
