March 16, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu on Monday swore in tax policy expert Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of State for Finance at the State House in Abuja, bringing the architect of the administration’s tax reforms directly into the Federal Executive Council.
Oyedele’s appointment followed a recent cabinet adjustment in which the former Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, was redeployed to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning, marking her third ministerial portfolio in the current administration.
The brief swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Villa formally ushered Oyedele into the cabinet, where he is expected to support the government’s fiscal management and economic reform agenda.
Speaking after the ceremony, President Tinubu described the appointment as a vote of confidence in Oyedele’s professionalism and dedication, particularly in coordinating the work of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms.
The President noted that Oyedele’s commitment and deep understanding of tax policy played a key role in shaping reforms designed to simplify Nigeria’s tax system, expand the revenue base and create a more business-friendly environment.
“We are very proud of your knowledge, your simplicity, ambition and excellence,” Tinubu said while congratulating the new minister and acknowledging the support of his family.
He also praised Oyedele’s zeal, patience and determination to serve the country, noting that the role would require strong leadership at a time when Nigeria is pursuing economic stability and growth through fiscal reforms.
Until his appointment, Oyedele served as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, a body established by the President to overhaul Nigeria’s tax administration and fiscal policy framework. The committee developed wide-ranging proposals aimed at simplifying Nigeria’s tax structure, improving compliance, reducing the burden on small businesses and expanding government revenue.
A native of Ikaram in the Akoko area of Ondo State, Oyedele is an economist, accountant and public policy expert with decades of experience in finance and taxation.
He began his academic journey at Yaba College of Technology, where he obtained a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Finance before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom.
Oyedele has also attended executive education programmes at leading global institutions, including the London School of Economics, Yale University, the Gordon Institute of Business Science and the Harvard Kennedy School.
Before entering public service, Oyedele spent more than two decades at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he rose to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader. He is also involved in academia, serving as a professor at Babcock University in Ogun State and a visiting scholar at the Lagos Business School.
His appointment is widely viewed as part of the Tinubu administration’s efforts to deepen fiscal reforms and strengthen Nigeria’s economic governance framework.
