October 10, (THEWILL) — Preparations for the 2025 edition of the Ofala Festival have begun in Onitsha, Anambra State, with traditional ceremonies already underway ahead of the main celebration later this month.
This year’s theme “Njiko na Ntachi” (Unity and Perseverance), underscores a collective message of solidarity and resilience as the ancient kingdom gears up to honour its royal heritage.
Pre-festival activities commenced with the Owuwaji, or Yam Festival, a thanksgiving ritual that marks the beginning of the celebratory season. The monarch’s annual spiritual retreat, known as Inye Ukwu Na Nlo Eze Onicha, follows, during which the king withdraws for prayers and spiritual consultations on behalf of the kingdom.
Another key ceremony, the Ogbalido, or Feast of Atonement, is traditionally held on the eve of the monarch’s public appearance. The ritual signifies renewal and the reaffirmation of leadership within the royal household.
According to the festival programme, the Iru Ofala is scheduled for October 17, featuring a display of royal regalia, traditional processions, and the presentation of homage to the monarch by titled chiefs and dignitaries. The second day, known as Azu Ofala, will hold on October 18, focusing on community participation, age-grade parades, and cultural performances across the city.
Chairman of the Ofala Strategic Marketing and Communications Subcommittee, Mr Nn’emeka Maduegbuna, said the 2025 theme reflects the collective spirit of the Onitsha people.
“The Ofala Festival is more than a celebration; it is a reaffirmation of our identity and unity as a people,” Maduegbuna stated. “This year’s message of ‘Njiko na Ntachi’ reminds us to remain steadfast and connected as a community.”
