January 19, (THEWILL) — Tragedy struck in Rivers State on Sunday as a police officer allegedly shot and killed his colleague, while another was seriously injured during an on-duty incident at Trans-Amadi area of Port Harcourt.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that the shooting occurred at about 1:20 p.m. at Next Cash and Carry Supermart, where Inspector Ibrahim Sani and Inspector Daniel Dauda, both attached to 14 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Yola, were on joint guard duty with military personnel.
A statement signed on Monday by the Rivers Police Command Spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, explained that the suspect, Inspector Victor Okus of 17 PMF, who was on special assignment at Intels, Onne, allegedly shot the officers in the head and neck regions. They were rushed to Nopsam Hospital for treatment, where Inspector Sani succumbed to his injuries, while Inspector Dauda is still receiving medical care.
The body of the deceased officer has been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary in Port Harcourt for preservation and autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, psc, mnips, ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident and directed that the suspect undergo an orderly room trial before being charged to court.
He further cautioned officers on the handling of firearms, stressing that weapon management is a serious responsibility that must prioritise safety at all times.
The State Police Command expressed condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Inspector Sani and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability and justice within the Force.
