January 12, (THEWILL) — United States President Donald J. Trump has issued a strong defence of his administration’s tariff regime, warning that a negative ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court could expose the country to financial liabilities running into trillions of dollars.
In a statement shared on his verified social media handle, Trump argued that overturning U.S. tariffs would not only require the federal government to refund hundreds of billions of dollars already collected, but would also trigger massive compensation claims linked to investments made by companies and countries seeking to avoid tariff payments.
According to Trump, several foreign and domestic firms have invested heavily in building factories, plants, and equipment within the United States as a direct response to the tariff policy.
He said when the cost of these investments is added to potential refunds, the total financial exposure would be “in the trillions of dollars.”
“The actual numbers that we would have to pay back, if for any reason the Supreme Court were to rule against the United States of America on tariffs, would be many hundreds of billions of dollars,” Trump stated, adding that the figure does not include “payback” claims for investments already made.
He warned that such an outcome would create what he described as a “complete mess” for the U.S. economy, insisting that any suggestion the issue could be resolved quickly or easily would be misleading.
Trump framed the tariff policy as a national security measure designed to protect American industries and jobs, stressing that a reversal by the Supreme Court could undermine economic stability.
“In other words, if the Supreme Court rules against the United States of America on this national security bonanza, we’re screwed,” he said.
Trump also linked America’s economic strength to global stability, arguing that “when America shines brightly, the world shines brightly.”
