February 01, (THEWILL) – US President, Donald Trump, is set to implement his threat to impose tariffs on Canadian, Mexican and Chinese goods.
Trump’ had threatened tariffs against Canada and Mexico along with China, to compel them to halt the flow of undocumented immigrants and illicit drugs into the U.S., as well as to narrow their trade surplus with the U.S.
During a press briefing, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, confirmed on Friday that President Trump will implement his threat on Saturday.
“The president will be implementing tomorrow 25% tariffs on Mexico, 25% tariffs on Canada and a 10% tariff on China, for the illegal fentanyl they have sourced and allowed to distribute into our country, which has killed tens of millions of Americans”, Leavitt said.
While the World Trade Organisation (WTO) has cautioned Trump against tariffs, experts say the measure is intended to advance American interests in negotiating better trade terms.
Last week, Trump pressured Colombia to receive deportations of unauthorised immigrants after he threatened 25% levies against Colombia’s goods.
The Trump administration has floated the possibility of a blanket tariff on a range of countries in Asia, South America, Europe and other regions as part of economic action to advance American interests.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Friday, President Trump said the U.S. will impose tariffs on oil and gas imports, likely next month, as well as tariffs on CHIP semiconductor technology and pharmaceuticals and “all forms of medicine.
“Eventually, we’re going to put tariffs on CHIPS. We’re going to put tariffs on oil and gas imports around Feb. 18.”
These he said are in additional tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, as well as on copper eventually.
