June 10 (THEWILL) — United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned that Iran would “pay the price” for delaying negotiations with Washington, raising fresh concerns over the future of fragile diplomatic efforts aimed at ending months of conflict in the Middle East.
Trump’s latest remarks came amid a sharp escalation in hostilities between the two countries, with both sides exchanging military strikes despite ongoing international efforts to salvage peace talks.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, the U.S. president accused Tehran of failing to seize what he described as an opportunity for a favourable agreement.
“Iran is all talk and no action. They’ve taken too long to negotiate a deal that would have been great for them, now they will have to pay the price,” Trump wrote.
The warning marked a significant shift from Trump’s recent expressions of optimism about a possible breakthrough in negotiations.
Just days earlier, the president had insisted that talks with Iran were continuing and suggested that both sides were moving closer to a deal.
On June 8, Trump stated that Israel and Iran were seeking an immediate ceasefire and that final negotiations on peace were progressing, although he maintained that a U.S.-led blockade would remain in force until a final agreement was reached.
Similarly, on June 1, Trump said talks with Iran were proceeding “at a rapid pace” despite reports from Iranian media suggesting that Tehran had suspended indirect negotiations with Washington.
At the time, he indicated that the United States was prepared to wait and would not necessarily resort to military action if discussions stalled.
The latest deterioration in relations followed reports that Iran launched missile and drone attacks against U.S.-linked military installations in Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait after American forces carried out strikes against Iranian military targets near the Strait of Hormuz.
According to reports, the U.S. operation was launched after an American Apache helicopter was brought down during military operations in the Gulf region, prompting what Washington described as retaliatory self-defence strikes.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks, accusing Washington of violating existing ceasefire arrangements and undermining diplomatic efforts. Tehran also signalled that it may reassess its engagement in ongoing negotiations with the United States.
Despite the renewed violence, diplomatic channels remain active. Reports indicate that Qatari mediators travelled to Tehran on Wednesday in a last-minute effort to revive negotiations and prevent a broader regional conflict.
The latest developments have heightened fears of a wider confrontation across the Middle East, where tensions involving Iran, Israel, Hezbollah and U.S.-allied Gulf states continue to threaten regional stability.
Global financial markets reacted nervously to the escalation. Oil prices rose sharply on Wednesday as investors worried that renewed fighting could further disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit routes.
