April 08, (THEWILL) — In a move reflecting intensifying coalition-building efforts ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday met with the David Mark-led African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership in Abuja, signalling a deepening of opposition alignment and strategic consultations.
The high-level engagement, held at Mark’s residence in the Apo Legislative Quarters, was described by participants as timely, coming amid rising political realignments and increased consultations among opposition figures preparing strategies for the 2027 Presidential election
The closed-door meeting, which lasted about two hours between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., focused on national developments, democratic consolidation, and avenues for inter-party cooperation.
THEWILL reports that the PDP delegation included Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who addressed journalists after the meeting.
He said the visit underscored the PDP’s commitment to strengthening democratic values and supporting like-minded political actors across party lines.
“We came here to visit the leadership of ADC. We are on a solidarity visit. We have observed developments within the political space, including protests by ADC members, and felt it necessary to show support,” Makinde said.
He stressed that constructive engagement among political actors remained essential to preserving democratic norms and preventing actions capable of undermining public confidence in governance.
“We are committed to ensuring a truly democratic space in our country,” he added.
Makinde further emphasised that collaboration among political parties must prioritise national interest, stability, and respect for the rule of law, particularly as the country gradually approaches another electoral season.
Sources at the meeting disclosed that discussions centred on strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing electoral transparency, and building alliances capable of deepening Nigeria’s multiparty system.
The talks also explored frameworks for sustained cooperation among opposition figures in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
The meeting drew an array of prominent political stakeholders, including former Minister of Information, Jerry Gana; former Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu; and members of the PDP National Working Committee.
Also in attendance were former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar; former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi; and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, highlighting the breadth of participation and growing momentum for cross-party collaboration.
Other notable figures present included former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal; ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola; and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, was also present alongside other senior political figures who contributed to the deliberations.
