November 15, (THEWILL) — Two soldiers and two members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) were killed on Thursday after troops of the 25 Task Force Brigade came under a sudden ambush by terrorists around Wajiroko, in the Azir–Multe axis of Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The troops were returning from a routine patrol described by military authorities as a successful mission near the fringes of the Sambisa Forest.
The patrol team, led by the Commander of the 25 Task Force Brigade, Brigadier General M. Uba, consisted of soldiers and CJTF operatives deployed to protect communities threatened by insurgents.
According to official sources, the terrorists opened fire on the returning troops in a bid to halt their movement and inflict casualties.
The military said the soldiers quickly regrouped and fought through the ambush with superior firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat in disarray.
Despite the resistance, four personnel were confirmed dead during the intense crossfire.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, described the deceased as gallant men who died defending their communities and the nation.
She said their sacrifice would remain a testament to their courage and dedication to duty.
The Army High Command extended condolences to the families of the fallen personnel and assured them of continued support.
The military leadership also stressed that the bravery displayed by the troops underscores their resolve to restore peace and stability in the Northeast.
The Army dismissed rumours circulating on social media alleging that Brigadier General Uba was abducted during the ambush. It clarified that the commander returned safely with his men and urged the public to disregard the false reports.
The military warned that misinformation during ongoing counterterrorism operations poses a serious threat to operational effectiveness and troop morale.
It appealed to Nigerians to rely on verified information from official channels and avoid sharing unconfirmed claims.
Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, Nigerian Army Medal, commended the troops for their bravery, resilience, and professionalism in the face of adversity.
