November 18, (THEWILL) – Racing driver, Ugo Ugochukwu, claimed victory at the 2024 FIA FR World Cup and 71st Macau Grand Prix, becoming the first United States competitor to triumph at this prestigious event since Bob Earl in 1981. The 17-year-old son of Nigerian model, Oluchi Onweagba, and Italian fashion designer, Luca Orlandi, led from start to finish, demonstrating exceptional control throughout multiple safety car periods.
Challenging weather conditions influenced the race strategy, with damp patches on the grid prompting race control to initiate proceedings behind the safety car. Following the controlled start, Ugochukwu maintained his position ahead of Olivier Goethe (MP Motorsport) and Noel León (KCMG IXO by Pinnacle Motorsport), managing several restarts with precision.
The race experienced multiple interruptions, including a red flag period following an incident involving several competitors at Lisboa corner. James Wharton, competing fresh from his runner-up position in the Formula Regional European Championship, initiated contact that affected multiple drivers including Kai Daryanani, Kanato Le, Tiago Rodrigues, and Jett Bowling.
Ugochukwu’s performance throughout the weekend proved exceptional, with the McLaren Driver Development Programme member recording the fastest times across every session. The composure of the R-ace GP driver remained steadfast despite the challenging 6.12km circuit layout and intermittent weather conditions, establishing himself as a strong prospect for his upcoming FIA Formula 3 campaign in 2025.
The podium positions remained consistent through the final laps, with Ugochukwu crossing the finish line ahead of Goethe and León. Notable performances included Mari Boya advancing from last position to seventh place, while Ferrari Driver Academy member Tuukka Taponen progressed into the top 10 from the back row of the starting grid.
