April 08, (THEWILL) — Ukraine President, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has called on Russia to halt its attacks while warmly welcoming the recent ceasefire between the United States and Iran, saying the truce in the Gulf region could pave the way for broader diplomatic efforts.

“Ukraine has always called for a ceasefire in the war waged by Russia here in Europe against our state and our people, and we support the ceasefire in the Middle East and the Gulf that paves the way for diplomatic efforts. It is obvious to everyone that a ceasefire can create the right preconditions for agreements”, Zelenskiy said on Wednesday in a post on X.

Ukraine has previously commended U.S. decisiveness in countering Iran, a close ally of Russia that has supplied thousands of drones used against Ukrainian forces and civilians. To strengthen regional security, Kyiv has deployed over 200 military specialists to the Middle East to help counter drone threats.

“Ukrainian expert military teams will continue to work in the region to help further develop security capabilities”, Zelenskiy added, highlighting Ukraine’s proactive role in promoting peace and stability beyond its borders.

While commending the Gulf ceasefire, Ukraine continues to urge Moscow to agree to a full cessation of hostilities in the four-year conflict ravaging the country. Kyiv favors an immediate truce to allow for negotiations toward a lasting peace, whereas Russia has insisted on comprehensive terms before suspending military operations.

International observers have welcomed Ukraine’s stance, noting that Zelenskiy’s support for the U.S.-Iran ceasefire underscores Kyiv’s commitment to diplomacy and constructive engagement with the global community.
