June 23 (THEWILL) — Uncertainty continued to surround ongoing diplomatic engagements between the United States and Iran on Tuesday, after President Donald Trump claimed that Tehran had agreed to submit to the “highest level” of nuclear inspections, a declaration swiftly challenged by Iranian officials.
Trump, speaking during a meeting with reporters, said Iran had accepted unprecedented monitoring of its nuclear programme and warned that there would be no further negotiations if the Islamic Republic failed to honour the arrangement.
According to the US President, the proposed inspection regime would provide international observers with extensive access to Iranian nuclear facilities and ensure long-term compliance with non-proliferation commitments.
“We are going to have inspections at a level never seen before” Trump said, adding that Iran understood there would be consequences if it failed to comply with the terms of the proposed framework.
The remarks came amid heightened international interest in the future of Iran’s nuclear programme following recent military tensions and renewed diplomatic contacts aimed at preventing further escalation in the Middle East.
However, Iranian authorities quickly pushed back against Trump’s assertions, insisting that no final agreement had been reached on nuclear inspections or broader issues relating to Tehran’s nuclear activities.
Officials in Tehran also rejected suggestions that Iran had formally agreed to the return of international inspectors under the conditions outlined by Washington.
Vice President JD Vance had earlier suggested that Iran was prepared to allow United Nations nuclear inspectors back into the country as part of a broader understanding reached during indirect talks. Iranian officials, however, disputed that claim, maintaining that discussions were ongoing and that no such commitments had been finalised.
