September 23, (THEWILL) — Nigeria has called for an overhaul of the global financial system governing Africa’s mineral resources.

Speaking at the Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG) roundtable on the margins of UNGA80, Vice President Kashim Shettima said African nations must finance their mineral sectors and assert control over supply chains to protect sovereignty and secure economic independence.

The Nigerian Vice president, while emphasising that Africa must unite to safeguard cobalt, lithium, graphite, gold and rare earths, urged leaders to leverage sovereign funds and innovative tools like the Africa Mineral Token.

He outlined four imperatives: climb the value chain, own and standardise Africa’s geological data, accelerate government-led exploration and finance Africa’s mineral future with sovereign and blended funds.

Commending Solid Minerals Minister, Dr Dele Alake, and the AMSG leadership, the Vice President, on behalf of President Tinubu, pledged Nigeria’s full commitment to catalysing a mineral-led renaissance under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He urged African leaders to rise with unity, clarity and courage in shaping a prosperous mineral-driven future.
