February 25, (THEWILL) – The United Nations Children’s Fund has announced plans to implement cost-cutting measures, including travel restrictions and workforce reduction, to sustain its humanitarian operations globally following a funding cut by the United States Agency for International Development.
This development comes after the U.S. government imposed a 90-day suspension on funding to certain aid programs, a move that could significantly impact UNICEF’s interventions worldwide.
Speaking to journalists in Maiduguri on Monday after inspecting a rehabilitation camp for repentant Boko Haram members, UNICEF’s Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Gilles Fagninou, stressed the crucial role of U.S. contributions in sustaining humanitarian efforts.
He warned that the funding cut would not only affect Nigeria but also have global consequences.
“This measure by the U.S. will have a far-reaching impact, particularly in West and Central Africa, where American funding plays a significant role in our operations,” Fagninou stated.
To mitigate the effects, he outlined some of the steps being taken, including reducing official travel and downsizing staff to improve efficiency.
“The reduction in funding means we must prioritize and manage resources more effectively. One approach is limiting travel expenses, another is optimizing our workforce to ensure maximum impact with available resources,” he explained.
Fagninou also emphasised the urgency of securing alternative funding sources, revealing that discussions were ongoing with governments and other partners to bridge the financial gap.
“Humanitarian assistance is critical, and the U.S. remains one of the biggest donors supporting interventions in Nigeria. With this setback, we are intensifying efforts to mobilize domestic and international resources to sustain operations,” he added.
Despite the challenges, the UNICEF official assured that the organization remains committed to its mission of supporting vulnerable communities, stating, “We are here to assist governments and local communities, leveraging both UNICEF’s own funding and contributions from other partners. Funding uncertainties are a reality, but we will continue striving to secure the necessary resources to meet urgent needs on the ground.”
