October 13, (THEWILL) — Academic and social activities at the University of Uyo have been brought to a halt following the commencement of a two-week warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) nationwide.
A visit by our correspondent to the university’s permanent and town campuses revealed an atmosphere of total inactivity, as lecture halls remained empty and students loitered around in small groups discussing the development.
The usually bustling classrooms and walkways were deserted, while most offices were under lock and key. Only a few administrative staff were seen attending to limited official duties.
A student who spoke on condition of anonymity expressed disappointment over the sudden disruption of academic activities. “I came early this morning to submit my assignment, but discovered that the university has joined the strike already, so there’s nothing I can do, than to return home,” the student lamented.
Confirming the development, the Chairman of ASUU, University of Uyo Chapter, Professor Olajide Opeyemi, said the institution had fully complied with the national directive from the union’s headquarters.
“The strike has kicked off officially in accordance with our procedures and Congress resolutions. It is a directive from the national body of our union”, he stated.
According to him, the action is aimed at pressing home long-standing demands bordering on funding for public universities, improved welfare for lecturers, and the implementation of agreements previously reached with the Federal Government.
Professor Opeyemi emphasised that the strike was not meant to hurt students but to secure a better and more sustainable university system. He urged the government to act swiftly to avert a prolonged shutdown of academic activities.
Meanwhile, students expressed mixed feelings over the industrial action, with some supporting ASUU’s decision, while others appealed for a quick resolution to prevent the academic calendar from being further disrupted.
