February 18, (THEWILL) — The All Progressives Congress has suspended its state, local government, and ward congresses in Adamawa State, a move seen as clearing the way for Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to formalise his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling party.
In a notice dated February 17, 2026, addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission, APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda and National Secretary Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru stated that new dates for the congresses will be communicated in due course.
The postponement comes amid significant political developments involving the governor.
A central feature of this arrangement is for Fintiri to assume control of the APC party structure in Adamawa State, positioning him as the party leader in the state once his defection is completed.
Sources indicate that the suspension of the Adamawa congresses is strategic, allowing Fintiri to formally join the party and establish a leadership structure aligned with his influence.
This development follows a declaration by President Tinubu on January 31, 2026, where he stated that “governors on the APC platform remain leaders of the party in their respective states,” a statement that reportedly reassured Fintiri of his unfettered control once he joins the APC.
