March 18, (THEWILL) – An explosion rocked the Trans-Niger Pipeline on Monday night at the border of Kpor and Bodo communities in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State, triggering a massive fire outbreak.
The pipeline, operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), transports crude oil to the Bonny Terminal. While the exact cause of the incident remains unclear, it comes amid threats by militants to attack oil installations over the ongoing political crisis in the state.
Spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the explosion, adding that two suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.
“The Rivers State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that a fire incident occurred at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC)-operated Trans-Niger Pipeline, located at the border of Kpor and Bodo communities.
“During a routine night patrol, security operatives observed the incident and promptly alerted SPDC management. The company immediately initiated safety protocols, including shutting down the affected pipeline. As a result of swift intervention, the situation is now under control, with no further threat to residents or the environment,” she said.
She noted that investigations had commenced to determine the cause of the fire, emphasising that the command remained committed to bringing any perpetrators to justice.
“We urge residents to remain calm and vigilant while we work to ensure the safety and security of all,” Iringe-Koko added.
