August 26, (THEWILL) — A Kaduna-bound passenger train derailed on Tuesday morning near Jere Station, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded.
The incident, which occurred around 11:09 a.m. at KM 49 between Kubwa and Asham stations, happened shortly after the train departed Abuja at 9:45 a.m.
It comes barely days after the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed that a coach on the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service developed a hot axle fault several kilometres from Rigasa Station in Kaduna on August 20.
Although no fatalities were reported, the NRC said emergency rescue teams, medical personnel, and security operatives had been mobilised to the scene to assist passengers.
“The Nigerian Railway Corporation confirms a derailment involving our Kaduna-bound AKTS train service at about 11:09 a.m. between Kubwa and Asham stations.
“Emergency rescue, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals have already been mobilised. A full complement of security is also on ground, and efforts are ongoing to move all passengers back to Abuja safely,” NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, said in a statement posted on X.
