January 07, (THEWILL) – On Monday, the US Congress certified President-elect, Donald Trump’s victory over Vice President, Kamala Harris, in the November 5, 2024 presidential election.
Harris (who lost to Trump), in her constitutional role as president of the Senate, presided over the joint session that counted the electoral college votes.
Republicans cheered for states that Trump won, and Democrats clapped for states that Harris won, with lawmakers on both sides rising at times for standing ovations.
After finalising the certification of Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential win and her loss, Harris told reporters that by performing her constitutionally mandated duty to oversee the certification process as president of the Senate, “I did what I have done my entire career, which is take seriously the oath.”
Noting she adhered to her oath of supporting and defending the Constitution, Harris said she believes that “America’s democracy is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it.”
