July 08, (THEWILL) — The United States has stated that, effective July 8, 2025, most non-diplomatic, non-immigrant visas issued to Nigerian citizens will be limited to single entry and valid for only three months.
In a statement on Tuesday, the U.S. Department of State said the decision is part of a global update affecting several countries and is aimed at aligning visa issuance with U.S. national security and immigration standards.
“Effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period”, the statement issued by the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria stated, adding that visas issued before July 8, 2025, will retain their original status and duration.
THEWILL reports that the new policy is a retaliation for Nigeria’s own method of only issuing single-entry 3-month visas to Americans.
However, the US Embassy emphasised that visa reciprocity, the practice of adjusting visa terms based on how U.S. citizens are treated by foreign governments, is a dynamic and ongoing process.
“Visa reciprocity is subject to review and change at any time, including increasing or decreasing permitted entries and duration of validity”, it noted.
According to the Embassy, the updated policy reflects technical and security benchmarks that apply globally. These include the requirement for secure travel documents, effective management of visa overstays, and information sharing between governments to enhance public safety.
“We commend the ongoing efforts by the Government of Nigeria’s immigration and security agencies to meet standards of international best practices”, the embassy stated.
While the policy reduces visa validity and frequency of entry for many Nigerian applicants, the United States stressed that the changes do not signal a shift in the broader U.S.-Nigeria relations.
“The United States values its longstanding relationship with Nigeria and remains committed to expanding our partnership based on mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic opportunity”, the statement said.
The embassy further encouraged compliance with all U.S. immigration requirements and advised Nigerians intending to travel to the U.S. to pay close attention to the terms of their visas and ensure that all travel documentation is accurate and up to date.
The U.S. Mission also reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to supporting educational, cultural, and business exchanges between both nations, emphasising that people-to-people ties remain a cornerstone of bilateral relations.
“Nigerian travellers are encouraged to respect and adhere to the terms of their visas, and ensure travel documents are authentic, accurate, and up to date. The United States remains a committed partner in deepening people-to-people ties with Nigeria via business, educational, and cultural exchanges. We look forward to continued cooperation at all levels with the Nigerian public and government officials to ensure safe and lawful travel between the United States and all countries”, the mission assured.
