August 17, (THEWILL) – Vereran journalist and former Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to former Military President, Ibrahim Babangida, Chief Duro Onabule, is dead.
His close associate, Eric Teniola, confirmed that Onabule died on Tuesday, at the age of 83.
Reacting to his death, National Publicity Secretary, Old Grammarians’ Society (OGS) of the CMS Grammar School, Lagos, Dare Odufowokan, described late Onabule as a worthy Old Boy, who was very passionate about the society and his alma mater.
“He remains one of the great Grammarians we looked up to. He had an exemplary career in the media that inspired many Grammarians over the years and he was proud of his membership of the Society”, he said.
Born in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun state, on September 27, 1939, he graduated from CMS Grammar School and School of Journalism, London.
His first media work was as a reporter for the Daily Express in 1961. Three years later, he joined the staff of Daily Sketch. He spent some time with Daily Sketch before going back to his previous employer, Daily Express.
In 1969, he served as the London correspondent of the Express. In the mid-1970s, he worked for the Daily Times, rising to become a deputy editor of Headlines magazine.
Onabule was the National Editor of defunct National Concord from 1984 to 1985 and later became Chief Press Secretary to the former self-styled Military President, Ibrahim Babangida.
Until his death, he remained active in writing and making profound comments on national issues. He was a columnist for The Sun Newspapers.
