November 26, (THEWILL) — Two people have been confirmed dead after suspected bandits launched an attempted attack on Kiri High School in Aiyetoro Kiri, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to reports, the armed men stormed the school in what authorities believe was a planned operation to abduct students. However, their mission was foiled by vigilant local security teams, including community vigilantes and hunters already stationed in the area.
THEWILL gathered that the swift and coordinated response of the community defence groups prevented what could have resulted in another mass abduction of school children in the region. The attackers were forced to abandon the operation and flee into the surrounding forest.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, Zacheus Dare, said the vigilantes and hunters acted promptly to repel the bandits. He added that security operatives, including a joint task force, have since launched a pursuit of the fleeing criminals.
Earlier, the Security Adviser to the Kogi State Government, Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd), dismissed viral social media claims suggesting that students were kidnapped during the attack. The rumour, which originated from a Facebook post, falsely alleged that bandits abducted schoolchildren during the raid.
Omodara clarified that although an attempted attack occurred, no student was taken, and community security teams responded swiftly to protect the school and its surroundings.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm as security operations continue in the area.
