June 22 (THEWILL) — Cape Verde announced their arrival on football’s biggest stage with a remarkable 2-2 draw against Uruguay in a FIFA World Cup group-stage clash on Sunday, earning one of the tournament’s most memorable results so far.
Making their first-ever appearance at the World Cup, the African debutants showed no signs of intimidation against the two-time world champions and stunned Uruguay by taking the lead in the 21st minute.
The South Americans responded strongly before the interval, scoring twice in quick succession in the 44th and 45th minutes to overturn the deficit and carry a 2-1 advantage into half-time.
However, Cape Verde refused to be overwhelmed by their illustrious opponents.

The draw represents a historic milestone for Cape Verde, a nation of fewer than 600,000 people, which secured a point against one of world football’s traditional powerhouses in its maiden World Cup appearance.
For Uruguay, the result will be viewed as a missed opportunity after failing to convert dominance into victory, while Cape Verde leave the encounter with growing belief that they can compete with the best teams in the tournament.
