June 24 (THEWILL) — Colombia booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after edging DR Congo 1-0 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Colombia were repeatedly frustrated by an inspired performance from DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau.
The African side absorbed sustained pressure as Colombia controlled 64 percent of possession and recorded 20 shots.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 76th minute when Daniel Muñoz capitalised on a defensive mistake and fired home after being played through by substitute Juan Fernando Quintero.
The victory guarantees Colombia’s progression to the knockout stage and sets up a final-day showdown with Portugal to determine the Group K winner.
DR Congo must now defeat Uzbekistan in their final match to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
