August 24, (THEWILL) — A don and faculty dean of the Management Sciences University of Maiduguri, Shehu Liberty, has urged Nigerians to embrace a practical approach to issues of present-day reality rather than relying on the theoretical aspect for accelerated development and effective economic sustainability.
Liberty, while speaking at its first faculty’s maiden Public Lecture of the Faculty with the theme: “Leadership, Institutions and Opportunities: The Role of Management Sciences in Civic and Economic Renewal”, held in Maiduguri, noted that there is a need for leaders to adopt solutions-driven approaches to tackle emerging challenges.
He emphasised that the first public lecture of the faculty aimed towards having a clearer understanding of how best to adopt practical policies in providing solutions to day-to-day challenges.
The Don said the initiative was set to provide a pathway to progress in terms of transiting from a theoretical to a practical approach to situations at hand.
He said, “The need to adopt a practical approach for overall economic renewal to ensure effective and efficient environmental reforms has dominated discussion towards taking Borno and Nigeria as a whole to where they ought to be.
“This event, undoubtedly, marks another significant milestone in the Faculty’s academic journey, and we are indeed delighted to share this momentous occasion with you all. We are committed to advancing knowledge and international best practices in Management Science, and this Public Lecture series is a testimony to our commitment.”
Umar Buba Bindir, a Guest Speaker at the event, who is also Founder/Chief Operation Officer Bindir Knowledge Centre while speaking on the theme”leadership, institutions and opportunities: the role of management sciences in civic and economic renewal” where he challenged the academicians to move from the usual academics papers to provide solutions to the growing numerous challenges facing the society.
According to him, he underscored the role of the faculty of management sciences and other faculties generally in driving the process.
Bindir decried the widening gap between the academics and governance in Nigeria, saying the situation is inimical to the economic development of the country.
He said that academics and the political class ought to collaborate to ensure that the outcome of research is used as a strategic plan for the development of the nation.
“There seems to be suspicion between the political class and academics. In other climes, research from academics is used as a manual for development plans. It’s time we addressed this widening gap”, he disclosed.
