May 06, (THEWILL) – Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has charged his colleagues to rise above partisanship and personal interests, urging them to prioritize the development of the country and the welfare of Nigerians.
Addressing the Senate on Tuesday as plenary resumed from recess, Akpabio reminded lawmakers that Nigerians are closely monitoring their actions and expecting legislative solutions to the nation’s growing challenges.
“Our economy continues to stretch the patience and resilience of our people. The rising cost of living, energy instability, and insecurity across parts of the country demand not just attention but legislative action,” he said.
Akpabio emphasised that Nigerians are not seeking rhetoric but tangible change, noting that many communities in the South-East and North-West are still plagued by criminality and terrorism, while the North-Central grapples with farmer-herder conflicts and the South-South continues to demand environmental justice.
“These are not just news headlines—they are the bleeding wounds of the republic. Our people look to us for rescue,” he said.
The Senate President also highlighted public discourse during the break on electoral and judicial reforms and the legislature’s role in sustaining democracy.
“In the media, during our recess, the reform of our electoral and judicial systems and the role of the legislature in sustaining democracy have taken centre stage. These are not idle conversations; they are the heartbeat of our democratic future.”
Akpabio reminded the Senate that every action would be judged by both the people and history.
“We are under watch. The people are watching. The world is watching. Our constituents are watching. And history—silent but unsleeping—is watching. No challenge must catch us unprepared. Every vote, motion, and oversight must reflect integrity and patriotism.”
He assured Nigerians that the Senate would focus on bills aimed at strengthening national stability, particularly in areas of security, the economy, education, technology, and youth empowerment.
“To the Nigerian people, I say this: your Senate is back at work. We have not forgotten your hopes, your hardships, or your hunger for change. We are here—refreshed in spirit and renewed in resolve—to build a nation where peace is not an illusion and progress is not a promise, but a pattern,” Akpabio declared.
