June 17, (THEWILL) – The United Nations has strongly condemned the deadly attacks on Yelewata Village in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
Amnesty International and local official reports say at least 100 residents were killed, dozens remain missing, and hundreds others injured after suspected armed herdsmen attacked Yelewata village and set houses ablaze late Friday, through the early hours of Saturday. Emergency workers say many victims were internally displaced people who had taken refuge in the village after earlier attacks.
Condemning the attack, UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, in a statement delivered through Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, expressed grave concern over the brutal nature of the violence and stressed the need for justice, saying “We’re monitoring the situation closely.
“The Secretary-General condemns the killing of innocent civilians, including in Nigeria, and we hope that those responsible for this violence will be found and apprehended. We’re monitoring the situation closely”, Haq said during a media briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York.
