August 28, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has said it has no signed agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made this known in Abuja while addressing journalists.
He explained that the documents often cited by the union as binding were merely proposals tabled during negotiations.
ASUU had on Tuesday threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if the government fails to honour its demands, including the 2009 and 2011 agreements.
The union accused successive administrations of failing to implement resolutions reached despite several rounds of dialogue.
But Alausa insisted that the 2009 and 2011 documents were not valid agreements.
“The documents ASUU has been referring to as agreements were just proposals that were never signed,” he said.
He also dismissed reports of a planned meeting with ASUU and the Minister of Labour, describing them as inaccurate.
He, however, assured that the Bola Tinubu administration remained committed to resolving outstanding issues with the university lecturers.
On the warning strike recently declared in tertiary institutions, Alausa said he had met with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, the Minister of Labour, and the Solicitor-General of the Federation. According to him, the meeting produced a resolution and a draft agreement, which will be forwarded to ASUU for review before any final decision is taken.
